Submission Guidelines

We welcome submissions of poetry, short fiction, and visual art within the dates specified below. We are pleased to announce that we will begin accepting creative non-fiction submissions in 2009.

Poetry Contest---Click here for submission guidelines for our Poetry Contest: March 15, 2009-May 31, 2009.  Guest Judge: Aimee Nezhukumatathil.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:

  • Send up to five poems
  • Short stories, novel excerpts, or creative non-fiction up to 6,000 words, double-spaced
Poetry: Submissions are accepted from September 1 to January 30 (postmark dates).

Fiction: Manuscripts are accepted from January 1 to May 31 (postmark dates). Please address manuscripts to "Fiction Editor".

Creative Non-Fiction: Manuscripts are accepted from January 1 to May 31 (postmark dates). We are interested in creative non-fiction essays on any topic that will engage a general reader; we will also consider excerpts from book-length works, but they must be able to stand alone. At this time we are not accepting book reviews, literary criticism, scholarly articles or straight reportage. Please address manuscripts to "Nonfiction Editor".

Visual Art: We are currently not accepting submissions for visual art.

Submissions sent outside of these timeframes will be returned unread.

Submission Checklist:

• If you are submitting poetry, submit up to five poems (note submission dates above).
• If you are submitting fiction or creative non-fiction, submit up to 6,000 words (note submission dates above).
• All submissions should be previously unpublished.
• All manuscripts should be accompanied by a cover letter that includes your contact information, a brief bio, and the names of the pieces you are submitting.
• Please include your name and contact information on each poem you submit. For fiction and creative non-fiction submissions, please include your name and contact information on the first page of your piece.
 • Should you submit something that is under simultaneous consideration elsewhere, please indicate this in your cover letter, and notify us immediately if it has been accepted elsewhere. We aim for a response time between three and five months.
• All manuscripts should be accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE) for a response. In an effort to save trees, we prefer that you not use large manila envelopes to mail your submission. Business size (4 1/8 x 9 1/2) envelopes work well--we do not mind folded pages. However, we understand that fiction and creative non-fiction manuscripts of longer length will need to be mailed in a 9 x 12 or 10 x 13 envelope.
• If you are submitting fiction or creative non-fiction, please include "Fiction Editor" or "Non-Fiction Editor" on your envelope and/or in your cover letter.
• Mail all submissions to: Crab Creek Review, c/o 7315 34th Ave NW, Seattle, WA 98117
• Please note that we do not accept email submissions.

Our current payment is in the form of one copy of the issue for which your work has been accepted. We buy first rights as well as the rights to use your name and the accepted work (whole or part) on our website. Beyond this use and following publication, rights revert to the author. We ask that Crab Creek Review be acknowledged in any subsequent publication of the work.

***Beginning in 2009, the co-editors will choose one poem, short story, or essay from the previous year's issues to receive the Crab Creek Review Editors' Prize. The author of the work chosen will have his or her piece featured online and will receive a $100 prize. There is no entry fee or nomination process for this award. All poems, short stories, or essays published in the previous year's issues are eligible.

Crab Creek Review also nominates yearly for the Pushcart Prize. Check back in December to see a list of our nominees. ***

We are proud of our literary magazine and hope you will want to purchase a copy of your own. We encourage you to subscribe!
